Tried-and-tested legacy systems may keep operations running, yet they slow down change and hinder modernization. Over time, processes become fragmented, manual work increases, costs rise, and security and compliance controls weaken. Identifying inefficiencies and foreseeing the requirements of tomorrow is what sets forward-thinking decision-makers apart.
As a leader in its industry, the Dutch mobility insurer Bovemij Verzekeringen, part of Bovemij Group, recognized the need to modernize its digital infrastructure. Through growth and acquisitions, the company came to manage hundreds of applications across several business units resulting in high costs and limited reuse.
The goal of modernization was clear: centralize integration, governance, and data access to improve speed, control, and cost-efficiency.
Technology transformation with Amplify Fusion
Today, Axway’s Amplify Platform forms the core of Bovemij Group’s IT landscape. It unifies ERP, financial reporting, data, and API access, enabling low-code integration and automation across B2B and B2C use cases. With Amplify Fusion, teams across the organization can design, run, and monitor integration flows without heavy custom development.
Bovemij Group’s integration journey is just beginning, but early results include:
- Several critical legacy integrations have been streamlined using Amplify Fusion
- Fusion has proven scalable architecture for future modernization across the ecosystem
- Significant reduction in FTE effort through low-code automation
Read on for a closer look at how Bovemij Group achieved these outcomes.
About Bovemij Group: innovative digital mobility insurance in the Netherlands
Bovemij N.V., headquartered in Nijmegen, is the parent company of the group operating under the name Bovemij Group. Founded by the industry association BOVAG, Bovemij Group has held a unique position and broad recognition in the mobility sector for over 60 years. It is the specialist and full-service provider for entrepreneurs in this industry, offering insurance (Bovemij Verzekeringen and ENRA), warranties (Autotrust), and data services (RDC).
Bovemij Verzekeringen is a leading Dutch mobility insurance provider serving B2B and B2C customers. This requires reliable connectivity with external parties, robust API management, and secure file transfers – all under strict data handling regulations.
In 2020, the on-premises infrastructure lacked sufficient oversight. Subsidiaries served similar clients using separate systems, leading to duplication, higher costs, and slower change.
Arjan van Hienen, System Architect ESS, Integration Specialist at Bovemij Group, describes how his team developed a new approach to their IT solutions: centralize, collaborate, and replace legacy solutions with new technology.
Centralizing access to APIs on a unified platform
Before selecting technology, the organization adopted the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe version 6.0). The SAFe methodology helps large organizations scale agile practices across teams, departments, and portfolios. Version 6.0 introduces updates aimed at enhancing business agility, improving team empowerment, and aligning strategy with execution in a rapidly changing digital landscape.
Based on this framework, the team chose Axway’s Amplify Platform to power front-end connections for B2B and B2C customers and provide a backend API management and integration layer across business units and suppliers.
On this unified API management foundation, Amplify Engage supports three API marketplaces – with two more planned by the end of 2025 – that catalog approved services and simplify API usage:
- Three external API marketplaces to expose publicly available APIs. One of these is dedicated to customers of the RDC subcompany, providing for example a BOVAG Auto Registration Services API, which fetches reports from the vehicle registration database. Two external marketplaces will also service the Autotrust subsidiary (which sells and supports extended warranty on vehicles) and Bovemij Verzekeringen, a vehicle and business insurance subsidiary.
- An internal API marketplace to publish reusable components for subsidiaries, serving as a centralized developer portal with comprehensive documentation. This helps Bovemij Group cut down on duplication of services and saves significant time and resources.
- An internal supplier marketplace to provide secure, governed access to Bovemij Group’s internal APIs when needed.
Modernizing and integrating legacy infrastructure with Amplify Fusion
The integration team spent the last several years building this foundation for a future-proof IT landscape. When new demands for modernization arose, they sought the ability to move fast without rebuilding everything they already had. Amplify Fusion helped bridge this gap, together with Amplify Engage and Amplify API Management.
Amplify Fusion is a low-code, AI-ready enterprise integration platform that enables teams to automate, orchestrate, and manage integrations via an intuitive visual interface.
Built on a foundation of out-of-the-box connectors, advanced orchestration, and visual flow mapping, Fusion empowers IT teams to scale faster, reduce friction, and respond to business demands with agility and governance.
Meeting evolving regulatory standards
As a regulated mobility insurance provider, Bovemij Group had just four months to remain compliant when the Dutch Vehicle Authority (RDW) announced the decommissioning of its SFTP endpoint in August 2021.
The team swiftly implemented an SFTP-to-API bridge, simulating RDW’s legacy SFTP server so that Bovemij Group’s core systems — some over 20 years old — could continue sending files without requiring code changes.
With support from Axway, the solution went live within the required timeframe, ensuring uninterrupted service. More recently, the integration team retested this use case using Amplify Fusion to parse each file, invoke RDW’s new API, return the response, and deliver results in the expected response file format.
The implementation was remarkably straightforward.
“That was basically our buy or no-buy use case for adopting Fusion. We knew that if it could handle this complex task, it could support everything that we needed for the coming years,” said Arjan van Hienen, System Architect ESS, Integration Specialist at Bovemij Group.
Amplify Fusion clearly removed typical integration roadblocks by bridging legacy system with modern APIs. It also enabled the team to gradually integrate new solutions into the existing landscape, without rebuilding the entire system from scratch.
To modernize without disrupting service, Bovemij Group aimed to transition fully to SaaS. The SFTP-to-API conversion was a strong start. It was followed by streamlining insurance claim flows, which were successfully migrated to our Amplify API Management solution. After this, the team began shifting remaining SFTP flows toward Amplify Fusion.
Here are three ways Bovemij has been leveraging Fusion’s intuitive capabilities.
Three practical applications of Amplify Fusion at Bovemij Group
Automating insurance claim handling
When a chunk of concrete falls from a construction truck and lands on your windshield, you need the glass replaced quickly. Bovemij Verzekeringen ensures that auto repair companies can have claims approved and paid promptly, so customers are not left waiting.
Behind the scenes, however, their insurance claim handling system had become complex and fragmented. Partner systems spoke different languages, using varied protocols and formats, and lacked centralized control. The result was slower processing, higher maintenance costs, and limited agility.
Amplify API Management orchestrates claim flows through modern REST APIs, and the delivery of data in required formats for each repair partner is now managed by Amplify Fusion.
Amplify Fusion’s visual mapper and out-of-the-box connectors enabled Bovemij Verzekeringen to automate and standardize the claims process from intake to payout without rebuilding legacy systems. And for customers, that could mean having their windshield replaced on the same day the accident occurs.
Replacing high-code datamart implementations with standardized APIs
Bovemij Group’s second major use case for Amplify Fusion focused on simplifying and standardizing how its internal data was accessed and shared across business units.
Historically, Bovemij Group relied on a heterogeneous tech stack — with custom APIs built in .NET, Java, and Python — to connect to various datamarts. These datamarts stored structured data for specific business functions like claims, customer profiles, or financial reporting. However, maintaining these custom implementations was costly, inconsistent, and slow to evolve.
Using Amplify Fusion, Bovemij Group is replacing high-code database APIs with low-code, standardized internal data APIs hosted in an Axway private cloud. Amplify Fusion enables the integration team to visually design and orchestrate API flows that connect to the datamarts, abstracting away the complexity of the underlying technologies.
The objective is to build a unified Insurance Datamart API to offer a single, governed interface that simplifies access to critical business data. This approach:
- Reduces operational complexity by eliminating the need to maintain multiple tech stacks
- Improves consistency across business units and applications
- Accelerates development by enabling low-code API creation and reuse
- Lowers costs by reducing full-time engineering effort (FTE) required for maintenance
Looking ahead, the team aims to extend this standardization to B2B APIs and time-critical data APIs, which are often used on B2C websites.
Fusion’s capabilities extend beyond APIs. When used to its full potential, Fusion acts as an orchestration and policy control engine for the entire digital ecosystem — offering both low-code simplicity and deep technical flexibility when needed.
As Arjan van Hienen explains, this dual capability is a major advantage for the integration team:
“What I like about Fusion is that, for example, we can run native DB2 database scripts, fine-tune them, and test directly without deploying. That saves a lot of time, so I’m very enthusiastic about the ease of use.”
Automating financial system workflows for an ERP cloud migration
Another major initiative was the consolidation and migration of Bovemij Group’s ERP system to the cloud. However, 21 other financial systems of record remained in place across the organization — each still critical for daily operations such as finance, HR, payroll, CRM, order management, and project workflows.
Initially, data exchange between these systems and the selected cloud ERP relied on manual exports and imports, often involving repetitive data re-entry. This approach was:
- Labor-intensive, requiring significant full-time employee (FTE) effort
- Slow, with updates occurring only on a bi-weekly basis
- Risk-prone, due to the potential for human error in manual processes
To address these inefficiencies, Bovemij Group began using Amplify Fusion to automate data flows between the main ERP and the remaining financial systems. The solution involves:
- Deploying APIs and SFTP connections to enable seamless, secure data exchange
- Automating alerts and notifications to keep teams informed of data transfers and potential issues
Fusion’s orchestration capabilities are empowering Bovemij Group to modernize its financial workflows without replacing all systems at once — enabling a phased, low-risk transition to cloud-based operations while maintaining control and visibility.
While full rollout will require time and coordination across many teams and systems, the early results demonstrate Fusion’s scalability and value.
Full speed ahead on innovation
Bovemij Group continues to explore new applications of Fusion to modernize its landscape and streamline integrations – for example, using Fusion to automate more manual work and enable real-time insights into traffic and usage.
The integration team is sharing feedback and working with the Fusion product team to influence the roadmap going forward and best fit market needs.
With Axway, Bovemij Group is communicating with partners and customers more seamlessly, improving integration and internal processes, while delivering a modern level of security.
“Axway has been consistently reliable in our experience, which now covers two decades.” — Arjan van Hienen, System Architect ESS, Integration Specialist at Bovemij Group
Amplify Fusion helps remove integration roadblocks by unifying disparate architectures into a cohesive digital ecosystem. As a key module within the Amplify Platform, Fusion ensures that integration is not only fast but also traceable, policy-compliant, and AI-augmented.
And while Fusion enables technical transformation, Bovemij’s journey is also a story of cultural evolution. As Arjan van Hienen reflects:
“Technology may be impressive, but it’s our people who make the real difference.”
His final thought underscores a key truth: modernization is not only about tools; it is about empowering teams to work smarter, collaborate better, and drive innovation.
