I am very proud to share that Axway was just recognized by Gartner as a Leader in the 2023 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for API Management¹ – for the eighth time.
What’s more, Axway was positioned furthest to the right for Completeness of Vision. This is especially meaningful to us, because we feel our innovative vision is in lockstep with the larger changes in the market, such as the importance of new capabilities beyond just an API gateway.
Axway is driving a shift to a more open, vendor-agnostic approach to API management, while evangelizing and enabling a strategy that treats APIs as products.
Through every evolution of our Amplify Platform, we have supported these principles by building the necessary tools to execute. Because, as Axway CEO Patrick Donovan said last year, what is the point of a vision if you can’t execute on it?
Federated/Universal API management is more important than ever
We now live and work in a very distributed environment, and we need flexibility and adaptability in the tools we use. Developers need a more cohesive experience. Unfortunately, many API management solutions have failed to evolve with this pattern.
We’ve been in the trenches with our customers and saw the signs early on: bloated API gateways, overloading of functionalities… We recognized that the industry was heading towards a cumbersome model that would eventually become unsustainable.
Axway proactively introduced our federated API management solution in response to these early indicators. We didn’t wait for the market to demand it; we anticipated the need and acted on it.
Our approach has been straightforward: offer a flexible and adaptable solution, allowing businesses to embrace a more streamlined and efficient model.
Most companies don’t have just one API platform, but several. They leverage multiple API models, including REST, events, and integration flows, spread across multiple clouds from multiple providers.
Our commitment to the BYOG (Bring Your Own Gateway) philosophy wasn’t just a marketing slogan. It was a direct response to the challenges our customers were facing. We want to empower them with the freedom to choose, integrate, and evolve without being shackled by a one-size-fits-all solution.
“We are proud of the steps we’ve taken to deliver results for our customers,” says Axway CEO Patrick Donovan. “Our vision for universal API management that drives consumption is rooted in conversations with customers to anticipate what enterprises need – and what they do not need – to execute on their business strategy.”
Today, we have customers in production with our universal/federated API management solution, reaping the benefits of a robust and flexible system that provides automated discovery, consumption, subscription, and onboarding. It is truly universal and non-obtrusive, without the need to create facades or proxies in front of existing endpoints.
Product-minded strategy requires a product-focused solution
If a federated approach to API management was the answer to securing and gaining better control of sprawling API ecosystems, Amplify Enterprise Marketplace, introduced late last year, represents a shift to driving engagement and maximizing value for API products.
Amplify Platform’s automated security tools like linting allow enterprises to perform semantic checks on APIs, ensuring they meet all corporate standards and are free of issues. Common tracking and reporting allow you to pull API usage metrics to get a more comprehensive view of your APIs.
And Amplify Platform General Manager Mourad Jaakou explains that Amplify Enterprise Marketplace gives API product managers the tools they need to deliver real business capability. “It helps gather and curate the right API products in a single portal so you can generate business value, not just solve a technical challenge.”
At its heart, Amplify Marketplace is about two things: reducing friction to the integration and consumption of APIs, and realizing the value from your digital products all the way through to monetization.
“A self-service approach means companies can integrate the API seamlessly into their development and delivery processes,” notes Mourad. “By minimizing the cost and effort for both provider and consumer of an API, your API marketplace helps to reduce the time needed for the first API call.”
Crucially, providing rich documentation, curating and bundling APIs into logical products, and essentially “marketing” APIs in this central API portal helps bridge the gap between IT and the line of business, speeding up projects and driving stronger ROI.
This approach is complemented by the consultative expertise of our Axway Catalysts, who help guide enterprises in building an API program aligned to their company’s digital strategy – going beyond the tech and into business enablement.
Finally, Mourad adds that the need to reduce friction has also been a driver behind our latest platform evolution: leveraging APIs as an integration technology with Amplify Integration, a flexible, scalable solution that leverages your existing IT infrastructure. It makes it possible to integrate applications, data, systems, events, and APIs – on-premises or in the cloud – without coding.
Our guiding principle is to help customers “Open Everything” — unlocking the full value of their data and APIs so they can open new markets, experiences, and possibilities. For API management, this translates to evolving beyond the IT domain: the goal is to deliver true products and fully integrate with the business.
As the industry shifts, Axway has been observing and actively shaping this evolution. We’ve been at the forefront, listening to our customers, anticipating market needs, and delivering solutions that maximize the value of what you already have – and what you have yet to create.
