Key takeaways from the iPhone 11 launch event

Key takeaways iPhone 11

Another iPhone launch event has passed and this time Apple revealed the latest generation of the iPhone, named iPhone 11. There were three phones revealed, the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. These are the key takeaways at the iPhone 11 event.

Apple seems to have taken what was the very popular iPhone XR from last year, improved it by adding CPU and GPU upgrades, another camera and renamed it the iPhone 11.

The iPhone XS has become the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, upgraded with new CPUs/GPUs and this time sporting a third camera.

As expected in recent years, the innovation curve of the iPhone is decreasing—we’re not seeing the huge leaps in processing power so the main focus this year seems to be on camera improvements and battery life with up to five hours additional battery life on the Max; four on the iPhone 11 Pro.

The new camera system on the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro deliver 60 fps at 4k including HDR Video, a new night mode that and new ultrawide lenses to frame incredible photos.

One new feature of iOS 13 which will be of interest to developers is the ability to access all of these new cameras at once (including the front camera)—allowing developers to build apps that can combine these in cool and interesting ways.

New entry-level iPad

As well as the iPhone 11, Apple also launched a new entry-level iPad, sporting a new 10.2” screen with a new resolution. As long as your apps are using scalable layouts and launch screen storyboards you won’t have much of an issue supporting this new device.

What was unexpected in the event was a Series 5 Apple Watch with an “always-on” display. There were rumors of a Series 5 but the consensus seemed to be it would be a minor upgrade with new materials like Titanium (good choice!) and Ceramic being the main feature.

Turns out Apple had a little more in mind and for the Series 5 we get a built-in compass (who else thought there was one already in there?) and a brand new screen with the variable refresh rate.

This new screen can scale from 60hz to 1hz (so one update per second) allowing it to go into a super low power mode which enables the always-on display.

Alongside iOS 13, iPadOS 13 will be launched providing additional features for iPads and making the iPad more “desktop-class” and of course watchOS 6 which has it’s own AppStore and support for independent apps that don’t have to be bundled with iOS apps.

Of course and as always, Axway is working to bring you iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 support for Titanium at launch with access to new features like dark mode, etc.

IOS 13 is expected to be available on September 19th, 2019 with iPadOS 13 coming on September 30th, 2019.
